Warning!
My lost kitten, Treasure
Trove has been returned to me! Because
I am unable to respond individually to the countless e-mails I have been
receiving about him I will explain the bizarre situation of his
disappearance and miraculous re-appearance, which is an astonishing story. Treasure was last seen
in my house at 6:00 p.m. on September 26th, 2011. We
had two sisters visiting us from 2:00 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. that day.
One of the sisters, Jenny Forst, from Vancouver, purchased two of my kittens.
About an hour after she arrived she asked if her sister, who lives in Kelowna, could also come to my house, which she did. When the time came to
put the kittens in the carrier, her sister helped me to unlatch the carrier
door, I put the two kittens into the carrier and the door was immediately
latched closed. Jenny and I went
downstairs to prepare and print the contracts.
While I was getting them ready she said she would have to go to her
van to get her handbag to pay me. She
returned about 10 minutes later and we signed the contracts and she wrote me
a cheque in payment for the two kittens. Jenny left my house at approximately 6:15 p.m. with the two kittens
that she had
purchased. Shortly after they
left and I put food down for my cats I noticed that Treasure Trove was
missing. I phoned Jenny a
few times but she was not available so I left messages on her voice mail
asking her to search her room in case my kitten had somehow got into the
carrier with the other two kittens.
I received no calls back. I left for Vancouver the
next morning and returned home on September 28th evening, so I
was gone two days from the time of Treasure’s disappearance.
On September 29th
afternoon I received a phone call from Jenny offering to thoroughly search
her sister’s house on the chance that the kitten might have been
transported there without anyone noticing.
She asked that if she were able to find Treasure would I give her the
silver kitten that I had reserved for somebody else.
Initially I said it would not be right to do this as I had a deposit
on the silver kitten. Jenny
then said she would not search for my kitten.
Wanting desperately to find my little Treasure Trove I agreed to let
her have the Silver Persian kitten if she found Treasure. About 15 minutes
later she phoned me and told me she had found Treasure in the house and
would give him back to me if I gave her the Silver kitten. I
agreed. She then asked if I
would give her the reward I had offered for information leading to the
return of the kitten. I
refused. I told her the kitten
had not been lost from my house but had been in her sister's house the whole
time. She said that she and
her sister would meet me at Tim Horton’s on Lakeshore Road in
Kelowna at 5:00 p.m. I was to
bring the Silver kitten for her if I wanted Treasure back.
I told her I would be there at 5:15 p.m. and asked my friend, Beth
Ritland, to join us there as I needed a witness.
We met as planned,
new documents were signed and Treasure
was returned to me once they had received the silver kitten. I had phoned the police
to let them know I was getting my kitten back and asked if they could be
there at the time. Unfortunately
they did not show up as they later told me they were very busy that day. Treasure is happy to be
home again and looks as good as if he had been combed daily, considering he was lost for a few days. I
am overjoyed to have him back. Addendum - I have subsequently spoken to Jenny's sister and I believe she initially had no knowledge that Jenny had taken the kitten from my house. |

Cats Urination Outside of the Litter Box Dr. Moshe Oz Rose Valley Veterinary Hospital, 2476 Westlake Road. Kelowna, BC Tel: 250-7699109 This article is dedicated to the miserable cat owners that are suffering from their cat’s urination outside of the litter box (usually on your favourite couch or in your bed....). As an owner of a cat that has this horrible habit I know how frustrating and annoying this phenomenon can be. There are different types of cats aberrant urination, and different reasons that can cause that. First we should distinguish between a real urination or urine spraying. Spraying of urine is most typical to adult intact male cats (not neutered), and the purpose of the spraying is to establish and mark their territory. This behaviour is part of a sexual vice. The cats are usually spraying their urine on vertical objects such as walls or furniture. Once the cat has adopted this habit, it is very hard to get rid off, hence many veterinarians are recommending to neuter cats before they reach sexual maturity. As opposed to spraying, although disturbing, is still considered a normal feline behaviour, a real urination outside of the litter box can be a symptom of a medical or emotional problem. The first step in tackling this problem is taking the cat to be checked by a veterinarian. The veterinarian will conduct a physical exam and will recommend medical tests to assess the cat’s medical state. Ruling out urinary tract infection and presence of crystals or stones in the urinary tract is very important because these tend to be common reasons for aberrant urination. Cats are very finicky, they are easily influenced by any change in the house. Try to think of any recent change in the cat’s life that might have triggered this behaviour. Here some ideas: - Changes in the litter box - change of the location of the box or the type of litter. - Infrequent cleaning of the litter box. Cats are clean creatures, if the litter box is not clean enough they will use a different place to use. -New baby in the house -New cat is the house can be a major stress factor. -Presence of guests or any other strangers. Sometimes the owners cannot recognize the reason for this behaviour, if only cats could talk... - Make the litter box attractive- use the litter brand the cat is use to, clean the litter daily, and place the litter box in an easily accessible place. - Make the places that the cats tend to urinate in unattractive using items like aluminium foil, sticky paper, or sandpaper. -Clean the area very well to eliminate the urine odour. Cats tend to return and use the same places they have used before because of the urine odour. - Use aversive smells in the area, you can buy products that are made for this purpose, cats tend to be averted by citrus smell for an example. - As tempting as it might be, do not get mad at your cat when you find the urine. Do not yell at it, rub it in the urine, or aggressively place it in the litter box. This reaction might strengthen the problem by increasing the stress and create a traumatic association with the litter box. If you catch your cat in the first few seconds of the urination you can try to promote a negative consequences to this action. Squirting with a toy water gun at the cat, or rattling a can with few coins in it might do the trick. It is really important that the cat will not see you doing those things. The noise/water squints should “come out of nowhere” so the cat will associate it with the urination and not with you. There are also anti anxiety medications that may help control urine marking in your cat. The suggestions above should be attempted before considering medication. |
